The History of Pench National Park
Let’s know how Pench National Park became the beautiful and safe forest that it is today. So, this green area was once just another piece of land where wild animals roamed freely, without any rules or protection. There was a time when hunting was common in this area, and people didn’t know the importance of wildlife.
The forest of Pench was used for timber, and the animals were hunted for sport. The first step towards the protection came in 1862 when the British marked this area as a protected forest. But, at that time, the forest (trees) was saved for wood, and animals were still being hunted.
Slowly, things changed in India, and people got to know about the protection of wild animals. Along with other parks, Pench became a sanctuary in 1977. With this, animals got the legal protection, and an area of 757.85 sq. km. was protected. The tigers, leopards, deer, and all other animals finally had a safe home where they could live and roam freely.
Some years later, in 1983, an area of 292.85 sq. km was declared as Pench National Park. Then in 1992, the government of India declared this whole area of 757.85 sq. km, including the park and sanctuary, as a Tiger Reserve, and right now it comes under the “Project Tiger”.
When it came under the Project Tiger, the laws became stricter, and forest management became better. The Pench National Park became one of the best areas that protects tigers in India. Even the BBC chose this area to film the behaviour of tigers with the help of spy cameras, and a movie named “Tiger: Spy in the Jungle” was released in 2008.
And, there’s also some good news - Pench National Park also became famous worldwide because of a very special connection. Everybody knows the famous Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book”, Pench is an inspiration behind that book, and it’s the home of Mowgli, Bagheera, and Baloo! This book gained popularity for the park and gave it love and attention from all over the World. ‘
